The Truth About Mounjaro: Understanding Side Effects and Staying Safe

Others

February 5, 2026

What You Need to Know Before Starting Treatment

With the growing use of GLP-1 weight management medications such as Mounjaro, more patients are achieving significant and sustained weight loss. While these treatments are highly effective, they are still prescription medications and can come with side effects. Most are mild and settle as the body adjusts, but in rare cases more serious reactions can occur. Recent reports of severe symptoms shortly after a first dose have reinforced the importance of proper medical assessment, safe prescribing, and ongoing clinical supervision to ensure patients are supported at every stage of their treatment.

What Happened in the Recent Case?

A recent case involved a UK woman who reported experiencing severe side effects, including vomiting, dizziness, and intense abdominal cramps, within 24 hours of her first dose of Mounjaro. After contacting NHS 111, her symptoms were believed to be a reaction to the medication. While individual experiences can vary, isolated cases like this highlight the importance of careful patient selection, correct dosing, and medical supervision, rather than serving as a reflection of how these treatments affect the majority of patients.

Common Mounjaro Side Effects vs Serious Reactions

It’s important to distinguish between typical, expected reactions and those that require urgent attention:

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Burping / indigestion

These usually occur when starting treatment or increasing the dose and often improve over time as the body adjusts.

Serious but rare side effects (that require urgent assessment):

  • Acute pancreatitis (severe stomach/back pain, nausea, fever)
  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling, difficulty breathing)
  • Possible injection site severe reactions
  • Pancreatitis and gallbladder inflammation have also been reported in regulatory schemes.

These are uncommon but important to recognise and should always prompt immediate medical contact.

Why Side Effects Happen

Side effects can occur because Mounjaro works by mimicking natural hormones that regulate appetite, blood sugar, and digestion. One of its key actions is slowing the rate at which the stomach empties, helping patients feel fuller for longer. This is also why gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, bloating, or stomach discomfort are the most commonly reported, particularly when starting treatment or increasing the dose. As the body adjusts to these hormonal changes, some patients may also notice symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, or changes in mood. These are often temporary and can be managed with appropriate dose titration and clinical support, which is why a gradual, medically supervised approach is essential.

Patient Safety: What You Should Do

Before starting a treatment like Mounjaro:

✅ Consult a qualified clinician

✅ Follow a personalised dosing schedule

✅ Report all side effects

✅ Don’t self-prescribe or source injections outside regulated healthcare pathways

Your body’s response matters, and it will be different for everyone.

What this means for patients

Mounjaro can be an effective tool for weight management when prescribed and monitored appropriately. Most side effects are manageable and improve over time, but any severe or unusual symptoms, even if rare, should always be taken seriously and assessed without delay. If you are considering medication-assisted weight loss, it is important to do so under professional medical guidance. This is not just about losing weight, but about doing it safely, with the right support in place.
